One of the happiest events in Denver today is I Remember Mama, a brunch that Strings restaurant owner-chef Noel Cunningham is hosting for 150 senior women who would otherwise be alone on this family-centered day. In addition to the meal, each guest will receive flowers, chocolates and a gift from Neiman Marcus. I Remember Mama is co-sponsored by Volunteers of America and Heritage Club Mountain View.

Keep on pedaling

The 20th anniversary Community Classic Bike Tour, benefiting pediatric trauma care at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, takes place a week from today and riders can sign up by visiting mckeefoundation.com. There are four routes from which to choose, ranging from the 62-mile Metric Century to a 5-mile family ride along the Boyd Lake bike path. Organizers say that in addition to the scenic routes, the event’s popularity is buoyed by the post-ride breakfast of cinnamon-wheat pancakes.

Who are these people?

Stories behind the names can be very interesting, as we can see by the newly elected officers of the Family Star Montessori board:

President Linda Surbaugh is a semi-retired attorney who spent 20 years representing the United States in criminal and civil matters before the federal court. She now works with Colorado Legal Services, assisting low-income families obtain and maintain housing. Vice president Vienna Presley has worked in Denver’s non-profit community for 15 years and is now the grants officer for the Cydney and Tom Marsico Family Foundation. Treasurer Martha Eubanks is a retired State Farm Insurance agent who co-owned a neighborhood coffee shop in Northwest Denver and secretary Regina Rodriguez is a partner with the Faegre & Benson law firm, specializing in products liability and mass torts. New to the board are Adam Newman, a Colorado native and certified public accountant with GHP Horwath (his specialties are business valuation, forensic accounting and management consulting), and Nancy Cohen, chief deputy regulation counsel for the Colorado Supreme Court and a founding member of Friends of Public Montessori.
