Qwest said today that it is the first carrier to launch products and services in a three-way competition for Networx Universal, a government contracting program that could be worth $20 billion over 10 years and is intended to upgrade telecommunications systems for dozens of federal agencies.

Denver-based Qwest, Verizon and AT&T are vying to provide voice, data and video services to as many as 135 government agencies. Contracts will be awarded by the U.S. Government Services Administration.

The three companies were picked by GSA in March to bid for the work.

Qwest has said it expects to receive Networx work by the end of the year.

“Qwest is committed to helping government customers take a strategic view of the range of services and technologies under Networx Universal that will transform their agency’s communications,” said Diana Gowen, senior vice president and general manager of Qwest government services, in a statement released today.
