Standout greenery
Flowers are fleeting. They bloom, show off a bit and leave you longing. But leaves are in it for the long haul. “Foliage” (Storey, $35 hardcover, $24.95 paper) is dedicated to the shades, goemetry and showmanship of the green stuff. Rob Cardillo’s attractive photography is accompanied by Nancy J. Ondra’s good advice on where and how to use plants in the garden.

READER TIP
Better, and safer, than poison
This week’s tip is from Sandy Landberg of Arvada.
We were using expensive poison on weeds that kept coming up in our gravel driveway. After quickly going through several bottles, we switched to generic white vinegar. We just refilled our poison spray bottle.
Guess what? The results were just as good, if not better. We don’t worry now about pets and wild life, and save money.
It’s best to go out early on a sunny day to do your spraying. It also keeps grass out of our flagstone path.
