Getting your player ready...

For Mother’s Day, Vivian Lewis of Wiggins, Miss., received a loving phone call, a dozen roses, a single, a double, a triple, a home run – and another single, for good measure – all from her son, Fred Lewis, a San Francisco Giants’ rookie outfielder.

“It was just a blessed day for me,” Lewis said after hitting for the cycle at Coors Field. “I told her this morning that I loved her and that I was going out to play my game, so that was that.”

Lewis became just the fourth player in major-league history to hit his first home run and hit for the cycle in the same game. The others were the Cardinals’ Cliff Heathcote (June 13, 1918), the Twins’ Gary Ward (Sept. 18, 1980) and the Astros’ Luke Scott (July 28, 2006.) Lewis completed his cycle with a single in the sixth inning Sunday.

“I didn’t know about it until the fans behind me in center field told me all I needed was a single to make it,” he said. Lewis doubled in the first, homered in the fourth and tripled in the fifth.
