ASPEN, Colo.-

The Colorado Transportation Commission has added Independence Pass to the Top of the Rockies scenic byway.

The commission recently added 40 miles to the route to include the pass.

The Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway Commission had recommended extending the route from south central Colorado near Leadville along Colorado Highway 82, from Twin Lakes to the west side of Aspen at the Maroon Creek Bridge.

The 122-mile scenic byway now includes three points that cross the Continental Divide, Fremont, Tennessee and Independence passes.

Several 14ers from the Collegiate Range are visible from Independence Pass.
