Cleveland – The executive editor and vice president of the San Jose Mercury News was named editor Monday of the Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper.
Susan Goldberg takes over May 29, becoming the Plain Dealer’s first female editor. She succeeds Doug Clifton, who will retire Tuesday after leading the newsroom for nearly eight years.
Carole Leigh Hutton, 50, takes Goldberg’s place at the Mercury News, leaving her job as vice president of Community Newspapers, which includes the Palo Alto Daily News, San Mateo County Times, Silicon Valley Community Newspapers and Pacifica Tribune.
Goldberg, 47, led the Mercury News for the past four years.
The Mercury News was purchased by Denver-based Media News Group Inc., owner of The Denver Post, last year and has a circulation of about 240,000.
