Winthrop backup guard DeAndre Adams died Wednesday, four days after suffering head injuries in a car accident.

The 20-year-old sophomore had been in a coma since the accident Saturday. He was returning home to Austell, Ga., when his car left the road, flipped and hit a tree.

Winthrop athletic spokesman Jack Frost said in a statement that Adams had “taken a turn for the worse during the night.” Adams had been in a drug-induced coma for four days at the Atlanta Medical Center before he died, the school said.

Adams played in all 35 games last season, averaging 2.1 points, 2.8 assists and 1.1 rebounds.

Kentucky: Huntington (W.Va.) High power forward Patrick Patterson announced he chose the Wildcats over Florida on the last day of the Division I signing period.

The 6-foot-8 Patterson helped lead the Highlanders to an unprecedented three straight Class AAA championships, the last with the help of O.J. Mayo, who will attend Southern California in the fall. The two led Huntington to a 25-2 record and a national ranking this past season.

Earlier this week, McDonald’s All-American Jai Lucas, the son of former NBA star John Lucas, decided to attend Florida instead of Kentucky, so landing the highly touted Patterson was vital to new Wildcats coach Billy Gillispie’s first recruiting class.

Texas A&M: Junior forward Joseph Jones said he won’t return to the Aggies if he thinks he will be one of the top 15 picks in next month’s NBA draft.

Jones has started 94 games, and he averaged 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds last season.
