Defending Senior Match Play champ advances
Defending champion Kent Moore of Cherry Hills defeated Charlie Post of Plum Creek 1-up to advance out of the round of 32 at the Colorado Golf Association Senior Match Play Championships at Red Rocks Country Club in Morrison.
Moore, the only player to win the CGA Junior Match Play, Match Play and Senior Match Play tournaments, will be joined in the round of 16 by John Olive of The Broadmoor, who defeated Dennis Fields of Fox Hollow in 19 holes. Olive is a four-time champion, winning in 1997 and from 2001-03. Among the others who advanced, Rick Weston of Meridian eliminated 2005 winner Kelly Crone of Deer Creek 6 and 5.
Ken Tanner, a 60-year-old retired railroad conductor from Penrose, finished fifth with a payday of $30,000 in the World Series of Golf at the Primm Valley Golf Club in Primm, Nev.
Soccer teams to play in regional tourneys
The Colorado Rush of Littleton and Real Colorado of Douglas County are among the 18 soccer clubs that will compete in the Red Bull Girls National League for Under-16 and U15 clubs. The league consists of several regional tournaments through 2008, concluding with a national championship.
Ficca named AD at Cheyenne college
Laramie County Community College has hired Jason Ficca as its athletic director and men’s basketball coach. Ficca, formerly coach at Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College, has 14 years of college basketball experience and will arrive on campus this month, according to a news release Wednesday from the college in Cheyenne.
