A high school student was arrested on a firearms charge after school officials said they found a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his backpack.

The 17-year-old boy, whose name was not released, had been in a fight with another student at Wasson High School in Colorado Springs on Tuesday morning and later fled the building, police Sgt. Howard Black said. An administrator apprehended him some distance from the school and found the weapon, Black said.

The student was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon on school grounds, disorderly conduct and interference. A police search of his home turned up a small amount of marijuana, Black said.

Earlier this month, two other Wasson students were arrested for allegedly making threats in separate incidents, and a student at Harrison High School in Colorado Springs was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder after investigators said he planned to shoot up a pep rally.
