Minnesota Twins right-hander Jesse Crain, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, has a torn rotator cuff and a torn labrum.
“It appears to have been there for some time and has worsened recently,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Jesse will get a second opinion in the next couple of days and we’ll go from there.”
Crain, a former athlete at Fairview High School, was 4-5 with a 3.25 ERA in 68 appearances last season. He has allowed 16 runs in 16 1/3 innings this season, and is 1-2 with a 5.51 ERA in 18 appearances.
Right-hander Julio DePaula was called up from Triple-A Rochester (N.Y.).
Red Sox: Right-hander Josh Beckett will not make his start Friday because of the torn skin on his right middle finger.
“Our starter will come from Pawtucket (R.I.) and where we go with Beckett on Friday will be determined on Friday,” manager Terry Francona said.
Beckett (7-0) will throw a side session Friday. If he checks out without any setbacks and does not go on the disabled list, left-hander Kason Gabbard would likely be the starter.
Mets: Prospect Lastings Milledge is in trouble with the team for making a rap CD that uses foul, offensive language.
In the song “Bend Ya Knees,” Milledge can be heard using a racist term for blacks and language derogatory to women.
“We don’t approve of the lyrics,” said general manager Omar Minaya, who added no disciplinary action had been taken but that position could change.
Braves: Atlanta put Mike Gonzalez on the 15-day DL with a strained left elbow and recalled fellow left-hander Macay McBride from Triple-A Richmond (Va.).
Meanwhile, right-hander John Smoltz said he will be able to make his next start Saturday against the Red Sox after hurting his throwing hand Monday.
Mariners: With his 10-day suspension over, Seattle placed pitcher Julio Mateo on the Triple-A inactive list as he continues counseling following his arrest in New York after a dispute with his wife.
Mateo was suspended for 10 days without pay May 6, a day after he was arrested on a charge of third-degree assault. Police said his wife needed five stitches to her mouth. The suspension cost him $54,645 of his $1 million salary this year.
Athletics: Oakland placed outfielder Chris Snelling on the 15-day DL with a bone bruise in his left knee. Outfielder Hiram Bocachica was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento (Calif.).
Rangers: Texas put outfielder Brad Wilkerson on the 15-day DL with a pulled right hamstring.
