A commission is looking at Denver’s public school system to see if some schools whose enrollment has dropped drastically should be closed.

Dan Villescas, principal at Del Pueblo Elementary, told KUSA-TV the commission is considering closing as many as 30 of 132 schools.

Enrollment at his school dropped from 217 last year to 165 this year. Next year he expects the enrollment to be below 90.

Villescas says he also has lost many teachers.

Former Denver Mayor Federico Pena, one of 100 people serving on commission studying Denver’s schools, says the district just has too many buildings. That’s despite recent population growth of two-point-six percent in the city.

Pena said if action isn’t taken things will just get worse.
