Led by freshman Dustin Morris, who shot a 6-under-par 66 in the final round and finished in 18th place with a three-day total of 206, the Colorado State men’s golf team jumped two spots to finish 16th at the NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
The top 10 teams from each of the three regionals advance to the NCAA Tournament, which starts May 30 in Williamsburg, Va. CSU finished at 844 and Denver shot 862 for 22nd place. South Carolina won the team title at 10-under 820.
Morris, who shot a 71 to open the tournament and added a second-round 69, vaulted from 42nd place on the final day.
Sophomore Zen Brown, an All-Mountain West Conference selection, shot a 71 in the final round and finished in 43rd place with 211.
Denver was led by sophomore Charlie Soule, whose 2-over 74 on the third day dropped him into 30th place with 213.
Patrick Grady’s final-round 77 gave him a three-round total of 14-over 230, good enough for 44th place to lead the Colorado men’s team at the NCAA Central Regional at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Colorado finished 20th with a three-round total of 940, some 22 strokes behind the 10th and final qualifying spot.
Tulsa won the regional at 895. Lamar’s Dawie Van Der Walt and Wisconsin’s Dan Woltman shared medalist honors at 1-under 215.
Baseball
Owen Williams allowed four hits over eight shutout innings to lead Mesa State over Chico State 6-0 in an NCAA Division II West Regional game Friday night at Reeder Field in Los Angeles.
Second-seeded Mesa State, which qualified out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, was the only undefeated team in the double-elimination tournament heading into a late Saturday rematch game against No. 4 Chico State.
Chico on Saturday eliminated Nebraska-Kearney, the RMAC Tournament champion, with a 3-0 victory. Top-seeded Sonoma State, an 8-7 loser to the Lopers on Thursday, was eliminated after No. 3 Cal State-L.A. won 8-7 to advance.
Track and field
Cowley Community College (Kan.) freshman Skyler Johnson, a graduate of Dakota Ridge, finished fifth in the shot put at the NJCAA National Finals in Coffeyville, Kan. Johnson threw 49 feet, 3 1/2 inches.
