With victories rare, patience is wearing thin for players not producing. Before Saturday’s game, the Rockies called up outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, designating veteran John Mabry for assignment.
Spilborghs nearly made the team in spring training, failing to capture the final roster spot in a competition against Mabry. Mabry, a proven bat off the bench, had one good game with the Rockies in an April road win over the Mets in an otherwise difficult start.
He repeatedly failed as a pinch-hitter, leading manager Clint Hurdle to admit Thursday that there might be changes with Mabry and Steve Finley.
Spilborghs, a 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, brings energy and versatility. He can play all three outfield spots. He hit .287 with four home runs and 21 RBIs for the Rockies last season in 67 games.
