DENVER-

A 2-year-old boy found dead after a flash flood was remembered by his mother Monday as “our miracle.”

Jose Matthew Jauregui Jr. was swept away from his mother, Elsha Guel, when floodwaters engulfed them while they were strolling on a bike path beside the South Platte River last week.

Jose’s memorial service was held Monday.

“He was our miracle,” Guel told KMGH-TV in Denver. “Even though I gave birth to him, everybody shared him and he was loved by all.

“He was our baby, and we’re never going to forget him,” she said.

Guel and Jose were taking their customary walk along a bike path beside the river on May 14 when the flash flood swept the boy away from her. Jose’s body was found seven to 10 miles downstream on Wednesday after an intensive search.

“I would just like to say my thanks to everybody who prayed for us to find him,” Guel said. “And everybody who searched, night and day, to bring him back to us.”
