The Broncos urged David Kircus to contact the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office this morning after learning that the receiver was allegedly involved in the assault of a Centennial man early Sunday morning.
Kircus, 27, turned himself in at 10:15 a.m. today and was charged with second-degree assault, a Class 4 felony, according to the sheriff’s office.
Kircus is accused of assaulting homeowner Jeff Krieger, 26, in the driveway of Krieger’s home in the 8200 block of South Krameria Way at about 3:27 a.m. Sunday.
Coach Mike Shanahan said he spoke with Kircus before the Broncos’ mini-camp practice today and suggested the receiver should answer to police. Shanahan said Kircus will be released from the team if he is found guilty of causing the multiple broken bones in Krieger’s face.
Krieger was released from Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree at 9:50 a.m. today.
Kircus, who missed practice today, posted a $6,000 bond and is due in Arapahoe County District Court on Tuesday morning.
“We’re going to let the due process take care of itself,” Shanahan said. “Like all situations, there is two sides to every story. And, obviously, if he didn’t handle himself the right way, he won’t be with us.”
Shanahan said Kircus told him “a much different story from what came across from the other person” and that he expects Kircus to practice Tuesday.
“Now, we’ll let the due process take care of itself,” Shanahan said. “If he’s guilty, then he’ll pay the penalty. If he’s not, obviously he’ll be with us.”
According to a report by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, Kircus was invited to Krieger’s house by a female acquaintance, and the woman and Kircus had a disagreement. Kircus was asked repeatedly to leave by Krieger, and during a discussion at the end of the driveway, Kircus allegedly struck Krieger and drove off in a black truck.
