Phoenix — LaTroy Hawkins represented the Rockies’ biggest offseason signing. Seven weeks into a season slipping away, Colorado needs him.
Hawkins was activated from the disabled list after missing the past 27 games with a strained forearm. Hawkins had struggled for two weeks leading up to his stay on the DL, inflating his ERA to 8.59. However, the bullpen needs fresh arms and a jolt of experience. The relievers own baseball’s worst ERA (5.58).
“The arm responded fine (during the rehab outings). That’s what I was down there for,” said Hawkins late Monday night. “It’s hard watching. I am ready to go.”
Rookie Darren Clarke is not listed among the available pitchers for tonight’s game on the lineup card, making it almost certain he has been optioned out.
The Rockies have used 21 pitchers this season, compared to 24 all of last year.
