First the Great Depression kept Solomon Foss from getting his high school diploma. Then came World War II.
Over the weekend, thanks to a state law that allows honorably discharged veterans to receive their diplomas, 88-year-old Solomon Foss put on a cap and gown with 411 Fort Collins High School graduates at a commencement ceremony at Moby Arena.
Foss missed his own high school graduation because he was helping support his family during the Great Depression.
“I came close to graduation … (but) it was the ’30s, I was too busy trying to make a living,” Foss said.
Then, Foss served in World War II as a railroad engineer.
On Saturday, he finally received his diploma.
“It’s something that is important after you finally grow up and wake up,” Foss said. “I’m glad I got it. I had been thinking about it ever since I got out of high school.”
