Jefferson County – A 43-year-old Lakewood man died Tuesday after he crashed his motorcycle in a street-racing incident, authorities said.
A second man has been charged with several counts, including leaving the scene of an accident.
Master Trooper Ron Watkins said James Sandoval was riding a black 1999 Harley-Davidson and Jerry Duran, 54, of Bailey, was riding an orange 2005 Ironhorse Chopper east on West 6th Avenue where it crosses West Colfax Avenue near Golden.
Witnesses said the two motorcyclists lined up at the stoplight and when the light turned green, they accelerated in a speed contest, Watkins said.
Sandoval, who had a passenger, Hope Fisher, 40, of Westminster riding on the back, lost control of the motorcycle and tipped over.
Watkins said Sandoval and Fisher fell off and slid on the pavement for an unknown distance.
Duran, who was riding alone, stopped for a moment, looked at the crash scene and fled, Watkins said.
Sandoval and Fisher were taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital where Sandoval later died. Fisher was listed in moderate condition.
On Tuesday, Duran turned himself into state troopers at the Golden office, Watkins said.
He has been arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries, engaging in a speed contest, reckless driving, driving under suspension and failure to have insurance and registration.
Watkins said all three are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. None was wearing a helmet or eye protection.
