Citing the economic, environmental and health implications of climate change, Colorado legislative leaders Wednesday urged the Environmental Protection Agency to let California enact stricter clean-air rules than those set by the federal government. In letters to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson, Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, D-Jefferson County, and House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, said the federal government should allow the states to implement landmark “Clean Cars” legislation.

Eleven states have lined up to say they will adopt California’s standards – demanding that automakers reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase fuel economy – if the EPA grants the waiver.
