Loveland wrestler Graff going to Beijing
Freestyle wrestler Tyler Graff of Loveland High School was named to the U.S. team that will compete Aug. 21-26 at the Junior World Championships in Beijing.
The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team signed two high school stars: Casey Cruz, a state champion at Wasson in Colorado Springs who went 40-0 his senior season; and Lance Gallegos, a two-time state champion from Arrupe Jesuit who went 125-11 in his prep career.
Cowboys getting guard from Greece
Wyoming signed Marios Matalon, a member of a Greek national team, to a men’s basketball scholarship for next season. He will join former Denver East star Sean Ogirri, a transfer from Wichita State, among newcomers.
Matalon, from Thessaloniki, Greece, is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard who will compete internationally for Greece’s under-20 national team this summer.
Huffer medalist in U.S. links qualifier
Becca Huffer, a junior from Littleton High School, shot a 1-under-par 70 at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood to earn medalist honors at a U.S. Women’s Amateur Links Championship qualifier Tuesday. Lynette Duran of Lakewood (73), Stefanie Ferguson (74) and University of Denver teammates Katie Kempter (74) and Dawn Shockley (74) also earned qualifying spots. University of Colorado golfer Lindsay Senger also shot 74, but is unable to attend the championship in Lexington, Ky., on June 18-23. First alternate Chelsea Benton of Colorado State edged CU’s Julie Kim in a playoff for the right to replace Senger.
