The driver of a semitruck died today after he hit a freight train in Weld County, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash occurred at Weld County Road 40 and U.S. 85 near Gilcrest.

The semi was an empty cattle hauler headed west on County Road 40 when it hit a Union Pacific train with 107 empty coal cars just after 10 a.m., said Trooper Ryan Sullivan.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Rescuers were working to cut the driver out of the truck into the afternoon, Sullivan said.

“They are going to be on scene for quite a bit longer,” Sullivan said.

Both roads were reduced to one lane of traffic during the investigation.
