A pitch for Alyssa
Upon first glance it seemed like heaven on earth. Alyssa Milano, the goddess of any sane man’s utopia, wanted to go to a Dodgers game with ME, the lowly water cooler guy. Ah, yes, Dodger Dogs, lukewarm $9 beers and the lost love of my life … but no. The dream was not meant to be. The fine print of the Touch Ultimate Fan Sweepstakes on the Dodgers’ website said one of earth’s most gorgeous women was only inviting me for a CHANCE to attend a Dodgers game and meet Milano. Yeah, sure, a chance for me and every other schmuck with no life. Oh, well, on the bright side, there’s always hope of winning the second-place prize ($150 worth of Touch by Alyssa Milano merchandise) or one of five third-place prizes (Milano autographed baseball).
Memorable Memorial
Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jamie Walker is celebrating the birth of a child whose name is certain to get plenty of attention in Detroit. The left-handed reliever, who spent the past five years playing for the Tigers, christened his 6-pound, 14-ounce son James Leyland. But, no, it’s not in
honor of Tigers manager Jim Leyland. The lad is actually named after Jamie’s dad, James Walker, and his wife Natalie’s grandfather, Leyland
Estes. “They both fought in World War II, and the baby was born on
Memorial Day,” Walker said. “We both liked the name, so we thought what the heck. I’ll catch a lot of flak for that. But that’s fine.”
Bottoms up to getting the wife a new purse
Florida Marlins reliever Justin Miller has tattoos covering an estimated 75 percent of his body, including an “I (heart) Billy Koch” inscription on one of his buttocks. Turns out that Koch paid him $2,000 to get it when they were Blue Jays teammates. “Then (Koch’s) wife felt bad for my wife for having to see it every day,” Miller said, “so she gave my wife $500, she said, to go buy a purse.”
Slim chance for switch
“It’s slimming. It’s faster. It was working. Oh, well.”
Jerry Porter, Oakland Raiders receiver, on learning he would have to pay $210,000 to switch his uniform from No. 84 to 81 in order to reimburse the team and Reebok for the cost of the unsold jerseys
