DENVER-
A 10-year-old boy found unconscious in a swimming pool died Thursday when he was taken off life support, three days after his sister died in what police say may have been an attempt to save him.
Yacob Gezaee and his 16-year-old sister, Bethlehem, were discovered by neighbors Monday in a condominium complex pool in the east Denver suburb of Aurora.
Yacob had been on life-support in the pediatric intensive-care unit at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver since then, but doctors told the family his medical condition was hopeless, hospital spokeswoman Angie Anania said.
She said Yacob died shortly after noon Thursday after the family prayed beside his bed.
The children will be buried in Ethiopia, where Anania believes the family is from.
When the brother and sister were found, Yacob was wearing swim trunks but Bethlehem was in street clothes, leading police to speculate that Bethlehem jumped into try to save him.
Police said there were no witnesses.
The children’s’ parents were both at work at the time, authorities said.
Yacob’s age was previously reported to be 11.
