Just as state officials kicked off a safety campaign by briefing reporters on the dangers of driving through “cone zone” road construction sites, a pickup driver died when he rear-ended a semi-truck stopped in a construction zone.
The Colorado State Patrol said a westbound semi-truck came to a stop at a construction zone on U.S. 34 near Wiggins in Weld County around 9 a.m.
A short time later, a westbound pickup truck slammed into the semi’s rear end, killing the pickup driver. The driver of the semi and his passenger were not injured.
Troopers have not released any identities. It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
