energy |Induction cooking insight
We’re seeing more induction cooktops these days. Because they use electromagnetic energy to generate heat instead of gas or electricity, these cooktops are 40 percent more energy-efficient, according to Wind Crest, an appliance company. The units also heat pots two or three times as fast as traditional stoves. Wind Crest suggests asking questions when shopping for an induction cooktop:
Is the product UL and CUL listed? Meaning, does it comply with all government safety regulations?
How much clearance is required under the counter? This measurement varies from one manufacturer to the next.
How large and how powerful is the cook space? With induction cooktops, pans should fit exactly within the heat zone.
Does the cooktop run on single or multiple generators? Brands with multiple generators provide more consistent results, according to Wind Crest.
space |Warding off ants
Combat, the pest control company, says ants tend to enter homes this time of year because they’re either looking for food and water to feed their colony, or heavy rain floods their natural environment. Read more about ant infestation at And take these steps to avoid the problem:
Caulk any gaps between walls and utility lines, around windows, and any other holes and cracks around the home.
Keep vegetation about a foot away from the home, and avoid placing mulch too close to the foundation.
Fix water leaks, and insulate cold pipes and appliances on which condensation develops.
Don’t overwater houseplants. Most plants should be completely dry before another watering.
Leave pet food out only at feeding time.
