A Fort Carson soldier was killed Tuesday in Baghdad, Iraq, after his unit was attacked by insurgents using small-arms fire.
Pfc. Justin A. Verdeja, 20, of La Puente, Calif., was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
Verdeja joined the Army in November, 2005, and was deployed to Iraq in Oct. 2006.
Verdeja was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Combat Infantry Badge.
