Getting your player ready...

The brains behind backpack design at Gregory Mountain Products recently unveiled a line of packs that does your thinking for you. Dubbed a “smart pack,” the new Z30 (MSRP: $119) is one of several new Gregory packs to incorporate Jet Stream DTS (Digital Transfer System) suspension that adjusts itself in response to how heavy your pack is. At 1,800 cubic inches, the Z30 is spacious enough for full-day pursuits or overnight outings, with a frame that can tell the difference. The DTS frame remains flexible (and allows air to flow through the back panel) when there’s little weight loaded on it and becomes more rigid to offer better support for heavier loads. Access the 2-pound, 10-ounce pack via a top-loading zipper or front bucket pocket. For a smaller version that’s just as smart, check out the Z22 at 1,312 cubic inches ($99).

Get it — Packs carried at area REI stores, Eastern Mountain Sports and other outdoors retailers.
