Unlike last year’s rainout, Janet Elway’s Janet’s Camp party had great weather Saturday night – just as she promised me in April. “That’s the No. 1 difference this year,” she said. “I talked to God. No rain.”
Good spirits came with the good weather. During the live auction for the YMCA, Gary Corbett asked what people would pay to see Broncos coach Mike Shanahan do the robot. Heck, Shanahan went one better, offering to do a 1 1/2 flip off the diving board into the pool, in his clothes, if 10 people would pony up $500 each. Done – and he did.
Janet then offered to swim laps for $10,000 – ponied up by Quiznos’ Rick & Cheryl Schaden.
Janet went inside to change, came back in a red one-piece, looking hotsy-totsy, and swam the laps.

Vail’s Sweet Basil turns 30 this month – a rare accomplishment in a town where restaurants come and go like tourists.
I finally got to see the renovated spot – with a bigger bar, smaller patio and bigger back dining room. Vail may be a war zone this month with all the construction going on, but Sweet Basil is looking good and feeling good.
“Pure flavors and the best ingredients,” says Matt Morgan, who owns/runs the joint with Kevin Clair. “We’re never satisfied with it, always trying to find ways to make it better.”
So on June 29 they’ll make a rare Vail toast. To 30 years in business – and 30 more.
