Sixteen employees at The Denver Post have accepted buyout offers, and from five to seven other, nonunion employees were laid off, the president of ap Inc. said today.
The Post, which is owned by MediaNews, took the action amid an industrywide restructuring as newspapers cope with declining readership and advertising revenue.
“I hope we’re done,” MediaNews President Joseph Lodovic said of the cuts. “Obviously, time will tell in terms of what happens with the business. We’re on target right now.”
Denver-based MediaNews is the nation’s fourth-largest newspaper chain and is headed by Chief Executive Officer Dean Singleton.
It operates The Post in a joint operating agreement with E.W. Scripps Co., the Cincinnati-based owner of the Rocky Mountain News. Last month, 17 staffers accepted buyouts from the News.
