GOLDEN, Colo.—Rescuers helped a Kansas man out of Clear Creek Canyon west of Denver Tuesday after he hurt an ankle climbing.

Dave Seals, of Topeka, dislocated an ankle while hiking with two friends late Monday, said Jackie Kelly, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Seals’ friends, guided by a global positioning satellite device, hiked to a roadside emergency call box and alerted authorities at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities closed a portion of U.S. 6, a heavily traveled route between Denver and the gambling towns of Black Hawk and Central City, for emergency vehicles during the rescue.
