A 16-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed a man last month during an argument could face homicide charges, officials said.

The youth turned himself in to authorities May 30 after fleeing to Mexico following the fatal stabbing of Juan Lera-Gonzales, 20, said Virginia Quiñones, spokeswoman for the Denver Police Department.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the suspect because he is a juvenile.

The teen and Lera-Gonzales got into an argument in a parking lot at 1100 S. Quivas St. on May 20, Quiñones said.

Homicide detectives identified the teen as a suspect and learned that he had left the country, she said.

The teen returned to Denver and surrendered at police headquarters, Quiñones said.

Detectives jailed the suspect for investigation of first-degree murder and referred the case for possible prosecution to the Denver district attorney’s office, she said.
