Senate backers of immigration reform will meet with Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY., this evening and present a plan to restart debate on immigration, said Sen. Ken Salazar.
Salazar, a Democrat, is one of a group of about 10 senators who crafted an immigration reform bill the Senate debated last week. Work on that bill collapsed when a majority of senators opposed an effort to move to a final vote on the bill. Republicans who voted against cutting off debate said they hadn’t had enough opportunity to offer amendments to the bill.
Salazar and other architects of the bill have been meeting this week, trying to narrow down a list of amendments that would be considered if the bill is put back on the Senate’s calendar. They have a list of amendments to present to Reid and McConnell.
Reid and McConnell must decide whether to accept the re-packaged immigration bill and re-start debate, Salazar said.
