Avalanche captain Joe Sakic lost out to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk for the Lady Byng Trophy tonight, given to the NHL player who best exemplifies a high level of skill with sportsmanlike demeanor.
At the NHL awards ceremony in Toronto it was announced Datsyuk outpolled Sakic despite having 13 fewer points (100-87) and being nine years his junior.
Sakic, 37, posted 100 points for the Avs last season, becoming the second-oldest player in league history to get as many points.
Avalanche rookie Paul Stastny lost out to Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin in the Calder Trophy award, given to the league’s top first-year player.
