Eagle Ranch offers pistachios, wines at dual-purpose groves

Pistachios are pistachios … unless they are from Eagle Ranch. Not only the freshest pistachios ever, but the flavors: green chile, red chile, garlic and green chile, lemon-lime, extra hot red chile and, of course, salted or unsalted. Taste the pistachio candies – and then the wines from the on-site Heart of the Desert Winery. Pistachio Blush, anyone? They also produce chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, a muscat and more. There are a gift shop, wine tasting, candy and pistachio tastings, and free tours. Open Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Eagle Ranch Pistachio Groves, 7288 U.S. 54/70, 800-432-0999,

Benson, Arizona

Magaly’s Mexican Restaurant makes a mean mole in a sleepy town

Benson is a dusty, sleepy little town in southern Arizona, 45 miles east of Tucson, on the way to Kartchner Caverns, Tombstone and Bisbee. It makes an ideal stop along Interstate 10 while hiking or birding in Cochise County – after which be sure to make a stop at Magaly’s Mexican Restaurant. Although you’ll want to try many of the usual combination plates, appetizers, chimichangas, flautas and tostadas, hold out for either the chicken mole or chicken pipian (like mole but with peanut butter and chile). Magaly’s Mexican Restaurant, 675 W. Fourth St., Suite A, 520-586-2027
