A Fort Collins man was killed this morning when he smashed his motorcycle into a parked car, authorities say.

Matthew Bettinghouse, 23, was pronounced dead at Poudre Valley Hospital, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

Bettinghouse was riding a black Yamaha motorcycle at 12:13 a.m. going east on McHugh Street when he didn’t stop at a stop sign at Montgomery Street and hit a curb, said Rita Davis, Fort Collins police spokeswoman.

He lost control of the motorcycle and it collided with a parked car in a driveway at 1120 Montgomery St., she said.

Fort Collins police are investigating the accident, Davis said. The intersection of Montgomery and McHugh was closed for about four hours.

Just before the accident, Colorado State University police officers chased a motorcycle closely matching the description of the Yamaha, Davis said.

The CSU officers stopped chasing the motorcycle more than a mile from the accident scene, and it is unknown if the two events are related, she said.
