LITTLETON, Colo.—An Aurora woman is competent to stand trial in the death of her 3-year-old daughter, a judge ruled Friday.
Susie Ida Quartey, 34, also now faces additional charges of child abuse, knowingly and recklessly causing death, and tampering with a witness or victim. Those charges were filed after coroner’s officials ruled the girl’s death a homicide.
She previously was charged with sex assault on a child and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. She was being held on $500,000 bond.
Quartey called 911 in April to report that her daughter, Jolyn Torpoh, had stopped breathing. Police said the girl had been beaten. Quartey’s lawyer has denied that his client beat the girl.
Quartey told police she was carrying the girl when the two fell in their yard.
