Getting your player ready...

Negotiations picked up quickly this afternoon as the Rockies closed the deal with Vanderbilt closer Casey Weathers.

Weathers, the Rockies’ top pick and eighth selection overall, agreed to terms, pending a physical. He agreed to a $1.8 million signing bonus, according to a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

Weathers rocketed onto the Rockies’ radar with a standout senior season for Vanderbilt. He led the Commodores in victories and gained a reputation as a tireless worker.

“After he got picked last year by the (Detroit) Tigers (in the later rounds), he told me he was coming back to school, that he didn’t come here to be a one-year rental. I will never forget him saying that. It was deeply appreciated,” said Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin on Monday. “He always thanked me and the pitching coach for the time we put in with him. He’s a special kid. His upside is huge.”
