The Bronx Bombers bombed in LoDo. The Colorado Rockies completed their three-game sweep of the Yankees Thursday and Denver has not been abuzz about its baseball like this since the early years and our own Blake Street Bombers.

Coloradans who weren’t waving brooms signifying the sweep at Coors Field should be reminded that Denver still has a fourth professional sports teams, 27-year-old Andrew Bradford of Denver said.

“If this doesn’t get more people coming out to Coors for games, I don’t know what will,” said Bradford, heckeling anyone around donning the familiar NY logo. “I’ve not been this excited since the Rockies’ first game ever, period. Right now if I saw (Rockies left-fielder Matt) Holliday or (first baseman) Todd Helton, I’d kiss them on the mouth.”

All week, Coors Field had been dubbed Yankees Stadium West with more fans dressing in the blue and white than in purple and black. But Thursday there were more Rockies fans in the stands.

“Probably more than half cheered the Rockies,” said Valerie Cordova, 22, of Denver, a Rockies fan who was attending the game in a Yankees cap and t-shirt. “Yankees are still America’s team, but when Helton got a hit, we still cheered – people looked at us like we were nuts.”

The last Rockies game Isaac Royston, 42, of Chama attended was the last time the Yankees played here in 2002. He shook off the sweep and said this would do the Rockies good.

“Hey it’ll put the Rockies on the map, at least,” Royston said.
