Cleanup is underway at an Aurora middle school that was vandalized.
Firefighters and hazardous-materials experts were called to Horizon Middle School this morning and found that up to 1,000 gallons of a latex-based mixture had been spilled. It was to be used to refinish a running track. The vandals also split open several large bags of recycled rubber “tire chips.”
The latex mixture has the consistency of hot tar. It ran several hundred yards down a sidewalk and into a storm drain near South Reservoir Road and East Mansfield Avenue, according to Capt. Mike Ackman with the Aurora Fire Department.
Investigators determined that the materials did not pose a health threat, so cleanup was turned over to storm-drain workers for the city of Aurora.
The school is located at 3981 S. Reservoir Road.
Aurora police are asking for tips from the public to find those responsible. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Sgt. Vanessa Wilson at 303-627-3152.
