Two people were believed killed when a small plane crashed in a ball of flames today on its approach to Greeley-Weld County Airport.

There were no survivors, and authorities were still trying to determine the identities of the victims, Weld County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Margie Martinez said.

The single-engine airplane was of the experimental variety and was on approach to the small airport just before noon when witnesses reported hearing engine problems, Martinez and an airport manager said.

The plane clipped a power line on its way down and ended up in flames near East Eighth Street and county roads 43 and 45, Martinez said.

No one on the ground was injured.

It had not been determined where the flight originated, the airport official said.
