A double-trailered semi truck jackknifed this morning on Interstate-225 near Mississippi Avenue, sending five people to the hospital.

Aurora police closed the northbound lanes of the highway from Mississippi to Alameda for about three hours, re-opening the lanes around 11 a.m., today.

Sgt. Mike Woodyard said the semi truck was following a Ford Explorer SUV sometime between 7:30 and 8 a.m., today, in morning rush hour, when it failed to stop for a traffic slowdown.

The truck went into the dirt median to avoid the Explorer but one of its trailers hit the Explorer, tipping it over, Woodyard said.

The Explorer had five occupants, all of whom were transported to Aurora Medical Center South for treatment of what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries. Their identities were not released.

The truck driver was not injured.
