FORT CARSON, Colo.—A soldier assigned to Fort Carson has died in Iraq of wounds from indirect fire, military officials said Tuesday.

Army Sgt. William E. Brown, 25, of Phil Campbell, Ala., died Saturday in Taji, the Defense Department said.

He was deployed to Iraq with the 571st Air Ambulance Medical Company and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Carson spokesman Lt. Greg Dorman said. After the unit returns from Iraq, it will be based at Fort Hood, Texas.

Brown was on his second year-long stint in Iraq, Dorman said. The helicopter crew chief joined the Army in 2002 and had earned the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.

Since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, 207 Fort Carson soldiers have died in the war.
