United Airlines’ workforce dropped to about 51,800 in April from 53,600 a year earlier, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, based on a count of full-time-equivalent employees.
United’s April 2007 full-time-equivalent employee count is down from about 67,000 in the same month of 2003.
United is the largest carrier at Denver International Airport.
Meanwhile, Denver-based Frontier Airlines’ headcount continues to grow, to about 4,800 full-time-equivalent employees in April, up from 4,300 a year earlier and 2,900 in April 2003.
SkyWest, a major carrier for United’s regional United Express operation, also has grown over the past several years to nearly 9,500 employees in April. There were about 8,200 a year earlier and 5,100 four years ago.
U.S. airlines, overall, had a 1.3 percent increase in employees in April compared with a year earlier. American Airlines had the most full-time-equivalent employees, at approximately 73,200 in April.
