GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Two people were found dead in the Gunnison River this week, and a rescue team leader said one may have gone into the river to save the other.

The body of Linda Louise Johnson, 37, was found Monday and the body of Danny Carpenter, 40, was found Wednesday. The bodies were about five miles apart, Mesa County sheriff’s investigators said.

The Mesa County coroner ruled Carpenter died in an accidental drowning. The coroner had not issued a ruling in Johnson’s case.

“We figured what may have happened is one got in trouble, one tried to save the other, and they both got in trouble,” said Dave Gitchell, the volunteer commander of the Mesa County Water Rescue Team.

The bodies were found about five miles apart, Mesa County sheriff’s investigators said.
