An abandoned suitcase found near the men’s room at Market Street station in downtown was filled with papers and books, a supervisor for the Regional Transportation District said Friday evening.

“It’s not a bomb,” the supervisor said at about 7:30 p.m. after looking at X-ray pictures taken by the Denver Police Department’s bomb squad.

At about 6 p.m., Denver police and RTD officials evacuated Market Street station because they could not find the owner of the suitcase. Buses that usually picked up passengers at the underground site were re-routed to 17th and Market streets.

Debbie Walker of Thornton was trying to catch the 120X bus home when she was steered to the above-ground site. “It’s bizarre, but these days anything goes,” she said. “It’s unfortunate.”
