A pace that has Cincinnati on track to lose 100 games for the first time since 1982 led to Jerry Narron’s firing as manager.
The Reds dumped their low-key manager a few hours after the St. Louis Cardinals rolled to an 11-7 victory Sunday that left the Reds stuck with the worst record in the majors at 31-51.
Ownership and general manager Wayne Krivsky declined comment after the firing was announced late Sunday.
Advance scout Pete Mackanin, who managed the Reds’ Triple-A team in Nashville from 1990-92, was chosen interim manager. He was the Pirates’ interim manager for the final 26 games of the 2005 season after Lloyd McClendon was fired.
Mariners: Mike Hargrove resigned as manager, saying his “passion has begun to fade” for baseball even though his team is the hottest club in the majors.
Hargrove, who managed Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, will be succeeded by John McLaren, his bench coach. McLaren’s first game will be today against the Kansas City Royals.
“There are no dark, sinister reasons for this decision. This has been my decision,” the 57-year-old Hargrove said about 90 minutes before his final game with Seattle.
Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said that on a scale of 1 to 10 on being caught off-guard, Hargrove’s departure was “an 11.”
Pirates: Left-hander Zach Duke was placed on the 15-day disabled list after skipping a planned throwing session and will have tests today on his sore left elbow.
Mets: Starter Jorge Sosa was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring, and Mike Pelfrey was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.
Brewers: Milwaukee traded right-handed reliever Jose Capellan to the Detroit Tigers for minor-league pitcher Chris Cody.
The Brewers then activated left-hander Chris Capuano, who had been on the 15-day DL since June 14 with a strained left groin.
