A former Denver animal-shelter employee was ordered to stand trial after two investigators testified today that she stole $103,367 from the shelter during a three-year period beginning in 2004.

Lucrecia Sena, 31, was an administrative assistant at Denver Animal Care and Control from Sept. 4, 2001, until she was terminated Jan. 26.

She is charged with embezzlement and theft in what the investigators described as an intricate scheme involving the juggling of books.

According to testimony at Sena’s preliminary hearing today, Sena’s responsibilities included a daily cash closeout and entry of dog- and cat-license data into the department’s computers.

Jonathan Willett, Sena’s lawyer, contended the investigation was incomplete and that other employees who had access to the shelter’s cash register could have taken the money.
