DENVER—Colorado Rockies right-hander Jason Hirsh, who sprained his right ankle avoiding a pickoff attempt at third base Monday night, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

The Rockies purchased the contract of right-hander Matt Herges from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take his place.

Hirsh is 4-7 with a 4.90 ERA and 66 strikeouts, second-most by an NL rookie. He was in the midst of his best game Monday night—six shutout innings, three hits—when he got hurt. After his second single of the game, he reached third base, where he rolled his right ankle on a pickoff attempt from the catcher.

Herges, 37, was with the Rockies April 19-20, appearing in two games and allowing four runs, three earned, in three innings. At Colorado Springs he’s gone 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA in 35 1-3 innings. Opponents were hitting .194 off him and he had 33 strikeouts and 10 walks.
