CSU-Pueblo names Wristen football coach

Former Colorado assistant coach John Wristen was hired Tuesday to coach the revived football program at Colorado State-Pueblo, school president Joseph Garcia said.

Wristen, 45, who last season was special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at UCLA, was an assistant coach on Gary Barnett’s coaching staff at CU from 1999 to 2006.

Rocky Mountain’s Burns on all-star squad

The Denver Post’s high school baseball player of the year, Andy Burns of Rocky Mountain, was selected to play on the West team for the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic, to be held Aug. 11 at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego.

Two local golfers advance at North & South

Steve Ziegler of Broomfield and Michael Baird of Castle Rock survived qualifying at the North & South Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., and advanced to match play, which starts today. Ziegler, a two-time 5A state champion who is headed to Stanford, shot an even-par 141 in the first two rounds played on the famed Pinehurst No. 2, and on course No. 4, and is seeded 17th for match play. Baird, who plays his college golf for Colorado, shot 144 and is seeded 36th.
