Ziegler advances, Baird falls at North & South
Steve Ziegler, a recent Legacy High School graduate, won his first-round match at the North and South Amateur at famed Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, beating the 49th seed, Jesse Speirs of Bangor, Maine, 5 and 4.
Broomfield resident Ziegler, the 17th seed, will face Phillip Mollica of Anderson, S.C., in the second round today. Ziegler is a two-time Class 5A state champion who will play at Stanford next year.
Michael Baird, the 36th seed from Castle Rock, a junior at the University of Colorado, lost his first-round match to the 13th seed, Cale Barr of Versailles, Ky., 2 and 1.
